Dorothy Parker was an American short story writer, poet, satirist, and critic. Parker was hardly five when her mother passed away in Her father remarried in , to Eleanor Francis Lewis. His second marriage jolted Parker. She never accepted the marriage and started hating both her father and stepmother. She turned against them to such a degree that she accused her father of being physically abusive and refused to accept Eleanor as her mother or stepmother; instead Parker referred to Eleanor as their housekeeper.

It is only here that people who have succeed in telling the truth, and staying true to the craft of writing poetry can exist. Without her use of sarcasm this poem would have been good but not great. Her sarcastic wording brought great attention to her poem, and allowed her to convey her message that love and hate are such passionate emotions that are so closely connected and can be intertwined into one another.

Her poems are short but meaningful in the fact that they make you think beyond just what is written on the page. The first time I read some of her poetry I thought that it was too male centered most of the time. However I still like reading her poems because of the way they made me think, she has a different perspective on topics than I do. That is why I chose to read her poems for my literature event as appeased to another more recognized poet. She writes 'Their candle gives a single light' at first I thought that it meant that they were simple.
